About Thistle Hill

My Story

I've been a graphic designer and artist for over 30 years working in various industries. Painting and drawing has always been my creative outlet and the reason I became a designer in the first place. I generally paint in watercolours but dabble in oils too. 

How it started

In 2017 my best friend was asked me to paint her spaniel Oscar for her mum's 80th birthday. I'd never painted a dog before, painting was always a hobby. But he came out very well, and I thought maybe I could print the picture on cards and sell them online, as a side hustle, and it worked! My little business grew slowly over time, adding flower cards and prints, and pet portraits and commissions. 

Why Thistle Hill Design?

I was never 100% happy with Queen Bee Art Studio, the original name of my shop. I'd always wanted my own online presence, and so it was now or never. Thistle Hill is where my husband's allotment is, and after years of buying him "unsatisfactory" diaries every Christmas, I designed a bespoke allotment diary and planner for him, and sold it through Amazon under Thistle Hill Books. I loved the name and thought it would work for my online business too, and it made sense to connect them both. The diaries are still available from here! They get updated every August, and make great Christmas gifts for the veg gardener in your life ;-)

Our Products

All the paintings featured on our products are my own work. They all start with a painting, then I photograph or scan them into my computer, and design the artwork ready for printing. I take inspiration from our garden, nature and the lovely countryside we live in.

Pet Portraits & Commissions

Unfortunately I don't take commissions for pet portraits at the moment, but this may change in the future.
